This art piece is a mosaic that was created by our leadership group on a recent team-building retreat. It is comprised of 54 individual 8 x 8 wooden canvases that were completed by members of the team. Each of the 45 members worked on their own canvas without seeing or understanding the overall picture until the nearly-finished canvases came together. The design was the result of an email conversation among the members who were asked by the retreat leader to describe elements they would like included in a piece of artwork to represent the hospital and our place in the community. Participants were given a week to send ideas via reply all email in discussion about the subject. The retreat leader then organized the feedback into a design. The artwork depicts the diverse Alaska Regional family holding hands and connected to the beauty and nature of Alaska. The image includes Matanuska Glacier, an elderly patient, husband and wife fishing couple, a pediatric patient, a caregiver in scrubs, a pregnant woman, a family with a small child, a caregiver, a native Alaskan, a young patient with a pet therapy dog, a patient in a wheelchair, a physician, a family with a newborn and young child, and a patient on crutches. The beauty of Alaska is represented by blooming fireweed, glaciers, an eagle and moose, trees and majestic mountains. It measures 4 by 6 feet, and weighs about 250 pounds. 30 colors of tile and 10 colors or grout were used. It is temporarily located near the elevators in our first floor lobby until our renovation is complete, and will be installed permanently in the lobby at a later date.
