This article about ballet is relevant to anyone in the arts, including photographers. While photographers may not experience the physical challenges that dancers do, it is important to remember that it is all a process. It takes a lot of time and effort. We cant pick up a camera and expect to be the Margot Fonteyn of the photo world after taking a few classes or shooting a few thousand photos. It takes years to master the technical aspects of photography, and even more years to make it our own, to imbue our work with our own personal vision. And just like dance, you lose your edge quickly if you dont practice continuously. It does not come easily, and it does not come quickly, but growth is directly related to how far you are willing to push yourself. If you settle for easy then be ready to settle for mediocrity. Take classes. Find a mentor. Assign yourself projects that force you to struggle. Above all, dont settle.
