Law 5: The Law of Confidence The extent to which you have supreme confidence in yourself and your power to bring about what you decide upon is the same extent to which you are likely to achieve it. “Confidence is the best wealth to a man in this world” Buddha A person’s overall success in life is very largely determined by the level of self-confidence that he or she possesses. As the other laws we are discussing in this book make abundantly clear, what you attract into your life is determined by your thought life, and what you believe to be true becomes true for you. All of this is especially true of Confidence. A person may be extremely talented, perhaps even a genius, but if there is no self-confidence then the chances of lasting success in anything are slim. A person with low confidence will not even put his talents to the test, let alone see them come to full fruition. Rather, he will cower in the shadow of Fear, imagining all that might go wrong and therefore not even try. As a result, not only is the world the loser for not having received the blessings that it might have, but that person too has lost out because rather than see those talents grow towards Mastery, they were instead left to wither and die completely. Human civilization was not built by unconfident people. There are no monuments to them, and their contribution to our literature, sciences, arts and culture has been minimal if not non-existent. Rather, it is the confident who are remembered and lauded. This is for one simple reason: it takes an incredible amount of courage and confidence to achieve anything in the first place, and then an equivalent amount to withstand all the obstacles and opposition that will surely come your way when you seek to announce it to the world and win acceptance for it. People may be personally quite shy and even retiring, but when it comes to their specific field of endeavor, they must be supremely confident or else all of their other efforts will be worth nothing. I am reminded of the No.1 insurance salesman for a certain company, who was so shy that when he was called upon to give a speech to the rest of his company about his sales techniques, he ended up doing so from behind a curtain! Yet, in front of actual prospective customers, he was a supreme master of his profession. You either live in a spiral of continual expansion or one of continual contraction. Nothing stays the same, day in day out. Change is the only constant. Hence, your life can only grow or it can contract. You can become more empowered over time or else ever less so. It may seem as if nothing much is happening in your life if you are not applying yourself, but rest assure that if you are not on the spiral of growth and expansion, you are for certain on the cycle of decline and contraction. This is why it is so important to build up the habit of confidence, even if it does not come naturally to you. The fact is that you can achieve confidence in almost anything, provided you are willing to be patient and full of perseverance, and provided you have the beginner’s mind; ever willing to learn, make mistakes, and keep trying until mastery is finally achieved.
