This article was brought to my attention: https://gma.yahoo/mom-child-special-needs-says-airline-humiliated-family-163017722--abc-news-topstories.html Situations like these are so unfortunate. Flying with young children can be extremely stressful in general. Accommodating special needs adds a whole other aspect many cant comprehend. When I have flown with my kiddos I indicate our needs during the purchase. I would highly recommend contacting the airlines with any special needs or requests prior to the day of departure. Being prepared, while it is difficult at times - traveling with children for me is overwhelming. I can only imagine how horrible the entire situation was for everyone involved. When planning travels with airlines we need to remember that there are rules and regulations. Checking with the airline prior to the travel date will be helpful in inquiring about your expectations and if they can be accommodated. Awareness and sensitivity towards varying circumstances is always a plus... We have a lot of work. This article saddened me and I hope it can help improve future situations. Again, I highly recommend calling the airline prior to departure, or even better, purchase, to find out if they can accommodate special situations. I have been reminded that traveling by air is a service but not a privilege. Airlines who want your business will try to work with you, if at all possible. All of the airlines I have used since having children allow car seats and booster seats with a purchased seat. Both of my kiddos have been restrained in safety seats when we have flown, just like in our car. (I will say that it is not easy getting those massive car seats secured in the airplane seats but I have always had luck with helpful attendants and patient passengers. I think they felt for me, dragging a huge seat in one arm and a child in the other and knowing that my child was going to be secure during take off and landing.) I dont feel comfortable holding them on my lap during take off, landing, and/ or turbulence. As a former police officer I am a huge advocate of safety restraint. I am not a fan of a screaming child, especially when it is my own, but know young children can become projectiles when they are not secure. Just some added food for thought. What are your thoughts?
