This is the face of evil. This round, peasant-like, tooth-filled yet vacuous visage symbolizes the real evil in todays world. Not Muslims, not ISIS (or whatever it is called this week), not the Black looters in Ferguson, and not the parade of evildoers the idiot box trots out each week to scare you. This ignorant, puerile media clown (and the thousands just like her) is who you should fear. This is what the banality of evil looks like. As Hannah Arendt wrote, Eichmann was not a fanatic or sociopath, but an extremely average person who relied on cliché rather than thinking for himself and was motivated by professional promotion rather than ideology. Banality, in this sense, is not that Eichmanns actions were ordinary, or that there is a potential Eichmann in all of us, but that his actions were motivated by a sort of stupidity which was wholly unexceptional. With her words regarding torture by US officials, Ms. Wallace reveals a wholly unexceptional stupidity and shows us how truly banal evil can be.
