This day in 1943, my father 2nd Lt. Joseph P. Murphy, was shot down on a mission to Gelsenkirchen, Germany. He was the Bombardier on B-17 42-37748 flown by Thomas Martin. They were members of the 100th Bomb Group, 418th squadron. There were only 2 survivors. My father and the navigator, 2nd Lt. James McCurley. Eight others perished god rest their souls. The two survivors were evadees for the next 10 months and with the help of the French Resistance were never captured. Like · · Share
