This day in Norment-Ward-Beall history 4 Oct 1907 I wonder how many court cases arose out of these various issues? Evening Star (DC) 4 Oct 1907 OF INTEREST TO BANKERS. Ruling in Case Involving Forged Indorsement on Check. A ruling said to be of interest to bankers and financial institutions has been made in Circuit Court No. 1, a verdict being directed for the defendant, the National Metropolitan Bank, which had been sued by the Central National Bank to recover $1,950 on a check drawn on the Central by Wharton E. Lester to the order of Mrs. A. E. McKnight. The court held that the bank was not liable because the person who received the money was shown by the plaintiffs testimony to be the person with whom the drawer of the check had dealt, and to whom he intended the proceeds of the check to be paid, even though the persons name was different from the name of the payee written in the check. In the testimony it was shown that Mr. Lester supposed the party to whom he gave the check to be Mrs. A. E. McKnight, although her name was Eulalie Puckett. The case grew out of the financial transactions of Mrs. Eulalie Puckett, a Department of Agriculture employe, who pleaded guilty to the forgery of this indorsement among others, and is now serving a term of imprisonment at Moundsville. The check was cashed at the Washington Loan and Trust Company, which guaranteed the indorsement to the National Metropolitan Bank which in turn guaranteed prior indorsement to the Central Bank. At the Central Bank it was shown the check was charged to Mr. Lesters account, but the account was reimbursed by the bank when the forgery became known. It is understood that when the judgment has been rendered on the verdict of the jury an appeal will be prosecuted by the Central Bank.
