This debate isnt new, and unfortunately isnt going away. It is symptomatic of a larger problem, and in my opinion, that is that the County has taken over the beaches and created a monster that is impossible to manage or control. While everyone is clamoring about the tourism and the revenue these destination attractions will bring, we are diminishing something of value for those of us who are year-round residents, and that is access to the beach. From the tourism standpoint, all of the eastern seaboard shares the same ocean, varying kinds of topography and local draws. Other than the short racing and bike week season, our draw is the history of beach driving and an experience that isnt found elsewhere. Unfortunately our town isnt renowned for pristine water like destinations farther south, we dont have an abundance of local attractions that would draw crowds independently of the ability to drive on the beach. What we have is a rich history and a unique ability for access to our beautiful beaches. We also offer traffic free zones to those who wish to enjoy the salt and sand without the hum of passing motorists. I raised my children on those beaches, and I cannot imagine having to drag three kids from six months to eight years old with all of the necessities across five lanes of traffic and it being any safer than watching them carefully enough that they dont dart into oncoming beach traffic. If I am faced with the prospect of living in a beachside community that is going to have realistic access to only beachfront property owners, then it may be time for our family to look at saying goodbye to this area and move to a more resident friendly local. Hopefully the council will remember that the occupancy of a few resorts will not generate the revenue lost through the exodus of full time revenue on the county property tax roll. Please dont be complacent and allow the further erosion of our rights to the beach! Sign the petition and if you cannot attend the meetings (as many of us who work cannot), email the council and let them know that our beaches arent for sale!
