This discussion highlights a distinction religious faithful and the nominal religious who say they are Christian or Muslim but dont literally practice their faith as directed by a holy book. Most Christians do not kill folks for working on the Sabbath, even though their bible directs this. Most Muslims do not kill folks who refuse to follow Mohammad, even though the Quran directs this. Muslims around the world heard US President George Bush loud and clear when he called for a crusade against Islamist Iraq. The Crusades were Christian military campaigns against Islam in the Middle Ages spearheaded by the Catholic Church to gain control of holy sites in the holy land. The Trade Towers attack was conceived in Afghanistan, planned in Germany and executed by 15 citizens of Saudi Arabia of the 19 attackers. Iraq had nothing to do with the September 11th attack, but that didnt stop a Christian US president from declaring a 21st century crusade against an Islamist state. (Bush explicitly used the term, crusade.) Now Islamist Sunnis battle Islamist Shiites for control of the Middle East and North Africa as a first step to battling Christian infidels (nonbelievers) in Europe and America. Bushs Christian crusade against Islamist Iraq ignited a firestorm of religious persecution and hatred that will not be extinguished for decades. ISIS is not a one-off. When Bill Maher and Ben Affleck argue about the implications of radical Islam, try to remember the context. The sad thing in the Ben Affleck tirade is that Ben Affleck kept talking over the neuroscientist and philosopher Sam Harris who has one of the most brilliant and informed minds of authors writing about morality today. Affleck was defensively rude and presumptuous. Too bad we never heard the full views of Sam Harris.
