This evenings talk by Dr Laura Schwarz at Leicesters Secular Hall on Infidel Feminism, her new book, was just wonderful. It was great to listen to a committed feminist taking us through the early history of feminism and free thinking and demonstrating the way a break from religion liberated women. As Assistant Professor in Modern British History she is currently working on a new project Feminism and the Servant Problem: Feminist Thought and Domestic Labour 1880-1939. This work focuses on the Domestic Workers Union of Great Britain and Ireland (est.1909) and suffragette maids such as Jessie Stephen and Kathlyn Oliver. Everybodys Reading offers us a real education. Next up, Kate Connelly on Sylvia Pankhurst at 7 tomorrow.
