This fascinating read is the story of the famous Oglala Sioux - TopicsExpress

This fascinating read is the story of the famous Oglala Sioux leader Red Cloud who was a brilliant battlefield tactician and who understood very well the problems that the white man was bringing west to his people. Over the years, there were not alot of books devoted to this great leader, however, Bob Dury has published this book and it is a great read. Red Cloud observed the treaties that were broken time and again by the U.S. Government and the land that settlers took by treaty alot of the Sioux hunting grounds. Red Cloud was born in 1821 in what is now Nebraska, Red he grew up an orphan who overcame social disadvantages to advance in the Sioux nation. Through fearless raids against neighboring tribes, like the Crow and Pawnee, he became a great warrior and leader well known throught the Native American nations and was among one on the elite warriors among the Oglala Sioux. This prepared him for fighting against the U.S. Army. Red Cloud frustrated and defeated the U.S. Army so convincingly that the army begged for a treaty with Red Cloud. The author uses Red Clouds 134-page autobiography, which was a great resource of information. This book also talks about the roles General William Tecumsah Sherman, explorer John Bozeman, mountain man Jim Bridger, and how Red Cloud would affect their careers and lives. As a word of caution, I have heard from those who know about the Indian Wars that this book is not as accurate as they would like, and I do not know as much as I should about the Indian Wars and Red Cloud so take that in consideration while reading this book. I also want to say that this is a great read and gives me inspiration to find out more about this legendary leader of the Oglala Sioux. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!
