This gravestone is in a suburb of Chicago, at Lithuanian National Cemetery. What does it have to do with St. Louis? In July 1967, an eccentric Chicagoan musician named Albert Vaitis Carter traveled to St. Louis to indulge in one of hobbies: being first in line. Al Carter was the first paying customer at numerous Worlds Fairs, across bridges, canals, festivals, the Sears Tower... and on July 24 1967 Al Carter was the first paying customer at the Gateway Arch. It is so noted on his monument: 1st Visitor - Top of St. Louis Gateway Arch - Jul. 24, 1967
