This happened last week and I had to share... weve gotta stop jazz wars!! LOL I stopped into a club to catch a set of a band that was comprised of very accomplished, well established young-ish musicians who were playing some original music. After one guy finished his solo and the room erupted, I overheard a guy at the bar (whom I later found out is a visiting musician/student) say to his friends Im not clapping for him; I hate those fusion-ey players. Now, everyone has their tastes--but it was obvious that the soloist was a highly skilled and artistic musician playing at a very high level and moving practically everyone in that club. He had a modern sound, but fusion is a stretch. Either way--cant we at least respect each others contributions and be grateful there are other people trying to put good music out there that is creative, thoughtful, fun and/or interesting? And if its not the best thing youve ever heard, cant we at least support them for trying? If were going to hate, we should be hating on the pop industry for pumping the same 5 bad songs in our ears until were brainwashed into liking it. We should be hating on the fact most kids dont grow up with music in the schools or at home. We should be advocating and supporting anything with artistic value, and loving that theres such a wide palate of music to draw inspiration from. What happened to being inspired by different things, appreciating what you like about something and leaving the rest alone out of respect? And if you really hate it, be thankful to that person for showing you what you dont want to do. We learn by being receptive and open minded; theres no progress in hating. The truth is, anyone who devotes their life to this art form is a kindred spirit. Its time we realize that and fight the real fight. #love #music
