This has been a big talker in the sports world this weekend. Heres famed baller Kareem Abdul-Jabbars really interesting take on it in Time. And I have to say, I agree and I think this is an important and worrisome moment. I dont think Levenson was misbehaving in a racially insensitive manner; I think he was a CEO trying to do what any businessman should do: figure out how to up his success and profit. Now please be clear: Sometimes when Ive posted things that touch on race, some of the comments are stunning, essentially telling anyone who brings up concerns about race get over it. . Thats intellectually lazy. Race matters and if we want to get to the smooth, sometimes we have to be willing to go through the rough, hopefully hearing each other out and being willing to consider views and experiences different than our own. As business leader Melody Hobson says, our goal shouldnt be to be race blind so much as race brave. But we cant get there if everyone cant speak honestly and without fear...and that includes white men like this one. Note: I want to hear everyones comments. But lets keep this discussion civil, even tho Im betting we wont all agree. And if youre going to comment, please take the two minutes it takes to read Abdul-Jabbars piece first.
