This headline makes the situation in Thailand look far worse than it actually is on the ground. We have just spent 4 days in Bangkok, and life was as hectic, frenetic and busy as usual. We saw no troubles or protests, and yesterday (19th May) saw no army on the streets. In my view this declaration of martial law was unnecessary because there has been very little violence over the past 7 months of protests. And certainly none out here on the islands. The local press stress this is NOT a coup, and believe the move was to prevent any possible violence between pro and anti-government groups as the latter were planning their final final push to oust the government in the coming week. If anything, this move is GOOD FOR SECURITY and should make Thailand even SAFER.
