This is Hamlin Avenue in Chicago just south of 53rd Street. I used to live on this street for the first 22 years of my life. My parents bought a home on this block brand new in 1948; it is the second one on the left. I recall many fun years here roller skating down this sidewalk, playing tag and hide ‘n seek. In the early 1950’s things looked much different; the streets were not fully paved, there were no curbs and many of the homes did not even exist yet. There were many prairies or open land where we played baseball. We crafted a circular elevated pitcher’s mound and dug bases into the ground from larger flat stones. One day we came home after school to find our baseball field bulldozed to make foundations for new homes. We were heartbroken. There was no city park within walking distance. Many changes occurred over the years as friends moved away and the sounds of kids running and playing ended. I moved away when I got married but Mom and Dad continued to live here for many years until I had to sell the property.
