This is Sara Volz, a high-school senior from Colorado who recently won $100,000 in the Intel Science Talent Search for her work on algae biofuels. Her project developed a pioneering technique for dramatically boosting the oil yields of algae, a crucial step in making algae biofuels a viable source of fuel. Second prize went to Jonah Kallenbach, 17, of Ambler, Pa., who built a computer-science tool for predicting protein binding for drug therapy. This new tool could lead to advances in the treatments for many diseases such as breast an ovarian cancer. Third place went to Adam Bowman, 17, of Brentwood, Tenn., who designed a compact and cheap pulsed plasma device. It has applications in fields such as manufacturing and nuclear physics and is small scale enough to be used in high school labs. Heres to innovation and technology, and heres to the next generation of scientists! More info: nyti.ms/XqK0sY
