This is Spike a little 6 month old Chi mix with a broken leg. He has a 7 year old human that accidently fell and landed on him. His owners surrendered him to us( Lisa Malantonio-Allison and David) because when he took the dog to a popular chain stores corporate veterinary office (they purchased a health care plan to protect their animal) they were referred to a specialty veterinary practice, after paying out close to 500$, they were told surgery was THE only option for this dog. The estimate for the cost of the surgery to plate and pin this fracture was $3,000.00. This is a loving family with proud parents and young children who were devastated because the dog sustained an injury.They reached out to rescue when they thought they could not meet their pets needs. Spike went to one of our rescue vets (private practice) and was re xrayed..turns out he does indeed have a fractured front leg with a break just above the equivalent of a human wrist. The fracture is only minimally displaced with no deformity and no growth plate involvement and has a good callous already forming over the break...long story short this dogs leg is gonna heal fine with out $3,000.00 plate and screws...cost of the exam and x-rays: $52.00, the value of returning this dog to his family: Priceless. This is one of the reasons we do what we do and it feels amazing!!!
