This is a Heliconia from Veracruz, Mexico, originally collected by Gary Hammer outside Fortin, VeraCruz, Mexico, and planted out in my garden. The last photo in this album shows the flower, which has affinities with H. scheideana, but has longer bracts and does not twist on the vertical axis as does scheideana. Unfortunately, a couple of 29F nights last December, (just an hour or two each night), burnt the foliage, and while the plants didnt look that badly damaged, I cut off all the burnt foliage. That may have been a mistake, because all the older stalks eventually developed stem rot, which I only discovered when I cut down the old stalks that still hadnt pushed out new growth by June. The middle photos of the album show the spotted leaf burn that just a couple of hours of frost created. The plants are finally pushing new shoots, but I never imagined it would take them so long to recover...
