This is a brave, unflinchingly unsentimental song. Dylan gets his protagonist lost and offers him nary a morsel of hope of redemption, or even of comfort or coherent direction; he provides him with only the company of a stranger who is taciturn, unreadable, but who is, nevertheless, his guide (or perhaps betrayer) across a baffling, foreign landscape.
