When I taught K-12 - one of the explicit purposes of schooling was to help develop good thinking citizens for our countys future. Dont know if this is the case today. I know that some of my graduate students (this is in Texas) said publicly in class that principals got on the schools audio systems and told children (even on the elementary level) to tell their parents to go vote for Mitt Romney. This was unheard of in my day.
