This is a collage featuring the veterans of my family who served in our country’s Military forces to protect and serve. The man in these uniforms symbolizes an act of bravery to defend the grounds we stand on. These men were given more than a name badge and weapon. From the era of the men who served in this collage, they were given a passage to a better opportunity coming from porous conditions of early sharecropping. In spite of the prejudice racism, the military was served as a passage for many blacks to escape their poor conditions. Based on the research I’ve conducted, the Military played a significant role towards the movement in the upward mobility of the poor families. Field hands became skilled men with dignity being given an opportunity to do things in spite of the racism towards their race. If it wasn’t for the military a lot of my family would have probably been sharecroppers. Many men became more than just field hands after they served for our country. The military provided the training and necessary skills that benefited many in several ways, whether it was discipline or being placed in a new location away from home to be given better jobs and opportunities to advance in life. The military gave many struggling Blacks a better way of living even if it meant they had to sacrifice their lives to gain it. In my family there were a lot of success stories after those young men and women were enlisted to protect and serve. Much respect to all those who are serving and my condolences to those who aren’t here with us who have served.
