This is a detailed photograph of a female worker bottling ketchup at the original Heinz Pittsburgh factory in 1897. The tomato condiment we know as ketchup has been around since the 17th century - it originated in China and English explorers discovered it in the 18th century and English settlers took ketchup with them to the American colonies. In 1824, a ketchup recipe using tomatoes appeared in The Virginia Housewife (an influential 19th-century cookbook written by Mary Randolph, Thomas Jeffersons cousin). American cooks also began to sweeten ketchup in the 19th century. Heinz Tomato Ketchup remains one of the best selling brands of ketchup.
