This is a letter I have sent to Greenock Evening Telegraph, hope they will print it. Please Don’t Desert Me Vote No! If Scotland becomes independent I can’t help but feel like I have been deserted by my own people. I was born and raised in Greenock, I will always be proud of where I come from. My childhood memories are listening to the boats sounding their horns in the docks at New Year. A great day out was going to watch the launch of a great ship at the docks. Watching the tug boats pulling the big ships. Eating clabby doos around the fire. Due to Margaret Thatcher’s Tory government closing our shipyards, lives were ruined, close families and communities were destroyed. I left school in 1979, to no job prospects for young people. I had to move to Peterborough in England to find a job. I’ve lived there ever since. My son has bright ginger hair and has worn his kilt to many family weddings in Scotland, as a student attending University in Liverpool, he practically lives on pots of home-made scotch broth, cheap, healthy and very tasty but he needs the influence you can all give him as well as I want him to feel part of my home town and its people. My experience in Greenock and what the Tory government did to our town and people, this has motivated me to become an active member of the Labour party. My husband was elected in 2012 as a labour councillor and we live in what used to be a true blue Tory area. I am standing as a candidate in the local election in 2015. This proves things can be changed but we can only succeed by standing together. Are you all aware that students in England have to pay up to £9000 a year in student fees, we have to pay for dental treatment and £8 per item for a prescription. In Scotland you get all this free and you are now being offered more by Westminster. You have got the best of both worlds. Look at Southern Ireland, since they became independent their cost of living is much higher. When my family from Greenock visit Peterborough they moan like hell about the prices in the pubs (and its a lot cheaper than Dublin), they are used to paying really cheap prices in great places like the Dockers Club. You are taking a lot of risks becoming independent and I can’t help but feel like you are deserting me. Please VOTE NO we should all stick together and fight the Tories, remove them from government in 2015. Together we are stronger, stay and fight them with us. Margaret Thulbourn (Nee Saidler)
