This is a letter we have written to the headteachers and governors of Redditch. We would like to add YOUR names in support of our feelings. Please post your full name in comments and I will add your name to the document when we send it. An open letter to all Headteachers and Governors of Redditch Schools We write to you on behalf of the facebook discussion group with regards to the recent events surrounding Tudor Grange Academy Redditch and their proposal to change the age range. As parents we were shocked by the sudden proposals from Tudor Grange, and were further surprised and disappointed by the subsequent proposals from Ridgeway Middle School, Astwood Bank First School and Webheath First School. We have been horrified to discover that a single academy could potentially make a unilateral move which could alter the educational structure of our whole town. We have seen that the Local Authority no longer has any real power to prevent this action, nor the resources to properly co-ordinate a reaction on behalf of the schools, parents and children of Redditch. We have also found no evidence that there is any other central body that could co-ordinate a thorough review of the proposals and their potential impact. We have been dismayed by the lack of information and comradeship coming from some schools. As parents, we no longer feel safe or clear about the education experience we have chosen for our children. We write to you, with the assent of the undersigned members, to ask the following: 1. If you are considering change we want to see firm and honest evidence that the change you seek would be significantly better than the alternative of working to achieve further improvements within the current system. We want to be assured that the benefits of change are not outweighed by the disadvantages. 2. We do not want to be fobbed off or patronised with misleading statistics, PR stories and marketing techniques. 3. We want to see you talking to each other about what works well in Redditch and what could be better, but most importantly we want you to talk to us. You expect your pupils to work together and should model this behaviour to them. 4. We want to have a clear understanding of your intentions for the future. 5. We want to be reassured. We want you to restore our faith in the educational establishment. 6. Most of all, we want you to put our children first in everything you do. Ultimately they are the ones who will be most affected by your choices. We believe there is a great opportunity here to strengthen and unite the educational opportunities in our town. We want to be proud of our community and of our schools. We want our headteachers to be fair and considerate leaders in these times of disruption and turmoil. The parents and children of Redditch need you to work together in partnership, to offer us practical solutions to a situation where we have been made to feel like pawns in a re-organisation game which so far has not had the needs of the children at its heart. Yours faithfully, Nichola Farnes Sharon Harvey Rebecca Hyder Supported by: (list of names here)
