This is a public service announcement. I see so many posts on Facebook about this truth and that fact. Although some things are interesting and even thought provoking, I find more often than not, the argument (even if I agree with it) is poorly supported in terms of data and evidence. Worse though, a convinced following continues to pass misinformation around. Here is a great article about how to read scientific studies. Vast majority of people have no idea how or cant be bothered to PROPERLY read/assess VALID AND RELIABLE studies. If you want to learn how, or at least get a taste of what that really involves, please take a look. If not, thats Ok, but here is a tip. If one of those facts or truths says A study shows or ONE study said.... be skeptical. In order for something to be relied upon as GOOD data, that same study needs to be repeated SEVERAL TIMES to ensure the same result is achieved. I mean, just think about this in practical everyday terms and that should make sense...Right? Just because something happens once, doesnt always make it a fact, or guarantee that the same thing is going to happen every time. Too many variables. I only say all of this because it seems to me that, despite any particular intention, good people are being fed bad information (me included), and sometimes it is doing more harm than good. And honestly, that bothers me. They can even profit off of our faith that they are being honest and/or accurate. I can accept that sometimes mistakes are made, or things change over time, but blatant dishonesty or destructive ignorance is a problem. If nothing else, if you cant sleep, this should help :) Be happy and healthy :) violentmetaphors/2013/08/25/how-to-read-and-understand-a-scientific-paper-2/
