This is a reality faced by young black and Latino boys. Were guilty at birth, given that the color of our skin labels us dangerous, thugs, or up to no good. We have to dress a certain way to put others at ease, our parents have to talk to us about how much more dangerous it is for us to go out at night in fear that we may not come back for so many reasons. I remember in 9th grade learning I cant do what they do in the sense of whatever actions I do will have a triple effect and punishment to my Caucasian peers. 11th grade, being pulled over by 6 Trussville cop cars with my Lebanese friend and having my car and person searched because an anonymous woman said we looked suspicious. I feel horrible that this is something my younger cousins will have to deal with, that the children of friends will have to deal with, that any child will have to deal with again. I implore you all to do something, say something, or at the very least, educate yourself. Its been said many times that black culture is popular, black people are not so next time youre bumping Lil Wayne and emphatically saying the n-word alone in your car, talking about how great Beyonce is, saying bae, or twerking; mirror it with reading a speech from MLK, reading up on the town of Rosewood, FL or the riots and killings that took place in Tulsa in 1921. This isnt brand new and with some education and enlightenment we can hopefully make a brighter future where history can be history and not be a continued cycle.
