This is a technique that Marine Recon Teams utilize to conduct an extract from very thick, triple canopy forest, jungle, etc. The Helo cant land in that crap, so using this method, they can drop the line though the canopy, the treetops, and we would then snap into the line, and once the Helo crew chief sees a thumbs up from everyone on the line, away you go, fast, high, and with the wind whistling around in your lil ears. Sounds good huh? Well, to insure the line just doesnt curl up on top of the treetops, denying the team below the ability to snap on, they attach a weight of some kind (can be anything from a concrete block to an old weight plate) to the end of the line. So, sometimes, ya gotta be light on the old feet when they throw that rope outta the Helo,,,,,LOL!!! The other issue is, looks highly dangerous for the folks attached to the rope (about the diameter of a HS gym climbing rope w/snaplinks woven into it). But the real crazies are the pilots & crew chief/gunner up there in the Helo. Theyre hovering up there the whole time, a huge, stationary target, making lots of noise, and with no intention of leaving until that Recon Team gets snapped on, and ready to fly. Wull, no complaints right? Thats why we all made the big-bucks in hazardous duty pay,,,,,LMTailOff,,,,big-bucks, yeah, a whopping $58.00 extra a month!!!
