This is a very important article on a book I do not really see much discussed. While often pigeon holed as a historical romance, this book was not only my first introduction to war, but one of the very few books I have read where war is seen from the perspective of the people left behind at home. One of the most fascinating parts of the novel was perhaps the discussions on the justification of war by fiercely patriotic Canadians in the face of terrible loss and grief. And if you did not weep copiously on reading Walters last letter, something is wrong with your very soul.
