This is absolutely BEYOND INSULTING. I didnt go to cosmetology school for my health or for kicks or to have a crap ton of student loans just because. I wanted a proper education at a high end beauty school and received a fantastic education (thank you, Aveda Institute Houston!) And a vast majority of what I know about the beauty industry I learned IN SCHOOL. I clocked my 1500 hours, took my written and practical state board exams, and continually fork over money annually to the TDLR so I can remain licensed, and I rarely do hair anymore. I would in NO WAY go to an untrained, uneducated stylist that learned crap off YouTube. There is so much sanitation involved, and because I know what is required, I see violations ALL THE TIME. It disgusts me that Texas is one of five states considering the deregulation of cosmetology licensing. Please, PLEASE, support professional hairdressers and sign this petition. Beauty school costs a minimum of $10,000 anymore, and thats at the community college level, not even Aveda Institute, Toni and Guy or Paul Mitchell (those schools are upwards $20,000 or more). By deregulating licensing, salons will become nasty, unsanitary places and the only benefit I could see to this would be all of the corrective color services REAL hairdressers will gain from all the botched jobs from untrained people.
