This is absolutely the truth. Except in most places you dont get 3 months of training on the job after you have been hired. You have to learn even quicker than that. My life long goal was to be a police officer. I started as a cadet with the Dexter police department and served 4 years with them in my hometown. Then I went thru the 3 month academy and was hired by the Caruthersville Police Department. Then later I worked for the Pemiscot County Sheriffs office and was assigned to the Bootheel Drug Task Force for 3 years. After that I returned to Caruthersville PD as a night shift supervisor. I left law enforcement with a total of 18 years served. I have seen almost everything you can imagine, some good most bad. It could have all been taken away from me very easily several times. I had several close calls in which I could have lost my life. I have responded to calls in which officers had been shot at or had a wreck. I have responded to calls where officers have lost their life. And yes in a split second decision I have had to pull the trigger on my firearm. It was a life or death decision in 2008. Ultimately the two other officers and myself were able to go home at the end of night. This was always my goal at the start of the shift for me and my fellow officers. I left Law Enforcement in 2011. Im often asked if I miss it. Honestly I dont miss the job. I dont miss the long hours the low pay and the disrespect we would always get. I dont miss having to solve everyones problems for them because they cant at the time. No matter what decision you make on a call 9 times out of 10 someone is not going to be happy about it. How many times have you called the police because something good was happening. Probably never. Next time you see a police officer thank them for their service. They deserve it. They dont get reconized enough for the good things they do on a daily basis. The one thing I miss from law enforcement are the guys I served with. We all made the most of the job while we were there. We had each others backs and we would make the night pass. That is the only thing I truly miss. Matt Fowler Police Officer 1997 thru 2011 Cadet 1992 thru 1996
