This is almost certainly bullshit but now and then Im susceptible to improbabilities so I think Ill give it a try. The only even half-credible study (published by Asia Pacific Clinical Nutrition Society) had two dozen participants eating 2 kiwis 1 hour before bedtime and self-reporting on if it helped them sleep (self-reporting studies are notoriously worthless without a control group, and it just wasnt possible to construct a placebo that looked like a kiwi). The study merely concluded that that the possibilities of assisting sleep merits further investigation, though sleep improvement by self-assessment ranged between 5 and 14%. This is more than enough to excite the woowoo crowd. No chemical component beyond antioxidants was identified as the possible aid. Which should mean blueberries, pomegranates, cherries, raspberries, strawberries or all sorts of fruits would do the same. Eating fruit and avoiding bread before bedtime is quite an old recommendation for improved sleep. At the same time one is supposed to avoid sugar, and you cant eat fruit and avoid sugar, so the historical recommendations kind of contradict themselves. The bigger reality may well be, live a healthy life and youll sleep better.
