This is an article from five years ago, but it is appropriate because the work is still going on and the uninformed are still fighting it. They are encouraging Great Britain to sign on to a treaty that would effectively ban all commercial work on them. What idiocy. Tax payers cant afford to pay for the work to protect or save these wrecks. Properly regulated private enterprise can. I am absolutely convinced that the only way to save the 1744 wreck of the HMS Victory, which is valuable commercially, archaeologically and historically, is to not only allow but to encourage the commercial archaeological salvage of the wreck. Before starting any salvage, the salvors did an enormous amount of historical research on the wreck and then thoroughly documented the destruction of the wreck which was already taking place through natural and manmade causes. Let them risks their money, in the end, it will be a plus for society. If left to the government alone, nothing will get done.
