This is an article written by a whaling ship captain in 1850 which was published in the Honolulu Friend. It is a first person narrative written from the perspective of a Bowhead Whale pleading for the massacre to stop. Of course by 1850 already 90% of the whales of all species in all oceans had already been killed. It was only when we started to use crude oil as a replacement for whale oil did the killing cease. In the 1800s the streets of all great cities of the world were lit by whale oil lamps. Whale by products fuelled the industrial revolution. The good news is that in the past 50 years with the banning of whaling, our East Australian Whales have been allowed to recover to over 15 thousand. Less than 100 whales remained when whaling ceased. Prior to whaling we estimate the population to be about 100 thousand.
