This is an email I received from one of my very kind fans who attended our concert at the Kuumbwa last weekend: Dear Elyas, Your concert last Saturday was unimagined in my expectations. i didnt think I would ever hear the soulful, authentic, classical Arabic music right here in Santa Cruz. You were superb, and I cant find words to tell you how moved I was by your talent and your performance. How you could play and sing with all your heart and soul like that!! How could you bring to life every nuance, every curly note, every squiggle, every agony, every hope, every sense, every high, every low!!!!! Every word, every note you sang and played was of the highest quality. How could you know and master what takes most people a lifetime to do even half as well. You perform as though youve had many lifetimes experience, but you are young and yet you are a maestro with an incrediblly gorgeous voice, so rich and so full of all the ancient cultural traditions that carry the emotions and draw us right into the lyrics and the melodies. You play the accordian like a god, really. You spare no effort, you give yourself totally to every note your fingers make. It seems to me, that when you were playing those intricate and complex melodies, you became one with your instrument, you were no longer separate, you were not performing from memory, but you were transformed into being the conduit from what was in your heart, all the way to the tips of your fingers, and all the way to our ears and to all our hearts. Amazing. Beautiful. Unforgettable.
