This is day four of the musical “challenge” set upon me by Susan Lindfors Taylor to post a favorite song on Facebook each day for five days. Eric Taylor is not a folk singer, despite many in the genre who would try to claim him. He is a storyteller par excellence, a poet and playwright, a songwriter, a versatile guitar player who played bass once upon a time for Lightnin’ Hopkins, slept on the couch at Dave van Ronk’s home in The Village, was a contract songwriter for legendary record producer Jack Clement, and is the only leftist I know who is most definitely not a liberal…hell, Eric Taylor has more facets than a brilliant-cut diamond. I owe Eric a debt I can never repay in this lifetime, for without his friendship and encouragement I would never have had the confidence to record “The Roadhouse Joint at Mitchell Point” CD which got my music into Oregon’s history of the Columbia Gorge Highway. He is one of the best-read people I know, eclectic and brilliant. In fact, we more or less met while simultaneously reading the biography of rock genius Warren Zevon back in 2007. Eric’s videos are sparse, but thankfully they include a version of “Peppercorn Tree” which I consider a love story that beats “Romeo and Juliet” like a red-headed stepchild.
