This is day two of my 5 day challenge of sharing 3 things I am grateful for ~ (1) I am grateful for becoming a birth junkie at the age of 12, after doing a book report on a midwife who served women in 1800s rural America. This led me read everything I could find about natural birth. It led me to read a magazine article about a woman who gave birth in France with Dr. Lamaze himself, and who then brought Lamaze to the U.S. I am grateful for the wisdom gained from these stories and the book Spiritual Midwifery by Ina May Gaskin, which led me to birth all 4 of my babies naturally, 1 hospital, 1 birth center and 2 at home. And, I am grateful I was granted my fondest wish for 4 kids: 2 boys and 2 girls, which was my imagined ideal family since long before I read the book about the midwife. (2) I am grateful for the opportunities Ive been granted to share with other women and their partners what beauty birth can bring to their lives ... when they help themselves to become prepared and fearless, and learn to trust their innate ability and power to give birth their babies as they desire. I am in awe of the power of a woman during childbirth. Its been a very special gift in my life to have been given so many opportunities to share with women who were once fearful about giving birth to their babies, and to be able to gently guide them to that place of self-confidence and a trust in that power. (3) I am grateful for the opportunity as a birth assistant/lay midwife (and later as a doula) to the hundreds of families who invited me into their lives, as they welcomed a sweet new family member earth side. My life is enriched for the knowing of all of them and witnessing their process.
