This is dodgy as. Prime Minister Tony Abbott and Environment Minister Greg Hunt are trying to fast-track construction of the Abbot Point coal terminal quietly over Christmas. They want it done fast, and they dont want you to know about it. They are doing everything in their power to get bulldozers on the ground, and they could start as early as the second of January. In their latest ploy to fast-track the process, Minister Hunt has given the Australian public a ludicrously small window to make submissions about the project. They put up 2,370 pages for review, but only ten days to make submissions. That window closes tomorrow. Can you urgently speak out against the project right now? Because of the two historic legal challenges you helped fund, Minister Hunt was forced to abandon the original plans and start over. They say their new plan is great, but we know the truth. They are still planning on dredging in the Great Barrier Reef World Heritage Area. They still want to trust ruthless mining company Adani with a coal port on the Reef coast. They still want thousands of ships motoring through the Reef. Only now, they will dump the 3 million tonnes of dredge spoil next to a turtle breeding ground, on tidal wetlands that is a crucial filter for the Reef. The last time the Government fast-tracked onshore disposal of dredge spoil on the Reef coast was in Gladstone Harbour. Heres a reminder of what that looked like. After dredging, the bund wall leaked sediment into the harbour, leading to a deterioration in the health of fish. [1] Fisheries in the entire harbour of Gladstone had to be closed, with seafood too diseased for human consumption. Weve seen what can happen. We simply cant let our Government or Indian coal-giant Adani get their hands on our Reef. Can you make a submission to help make sure this doesnt happen again? You dont need to be an expert to make a submission (or have read all 2370 pages), you just need to show the Government how many Australians are willing to fight to protect our Reef. Weve provided a simple how-to guide on making a submission. When you make the submission, well also collect your responses and deliver copies directly to Minister Hunt, so theres no way he can pretend to ignore the huge strength of our movement. We wont be ignored. Sam R, Adam and Paul, for the GetUp Team
