This is for Mike Heninger - because you love the Romantic Poets. My daughter is a Shakespeare Expert. She has the right, in many places, to handle and examine manuscripts that the general public is usually not able to even see. In some libraries they have some Shakespeare where you can see them under glass. These are usually in rooms where there is special light that wont damage the precious manuscripts. She is able to take those manuscripts out and handle them, read them, examine them. She also has a camera (that cost A LOT!) with which she can take photographs of the works. It would damage them to be run through a photocopier or scanner. She has to wear special clothes, have her hair completely covered and wear special gloves and a mask (like you do when you have a cold.) She has just written a book on The New Variorum Shakespeare which was done by Horace Howard Furness and the actor Edwin Booth. Edwin Booth was one of the greatest American Actors of all time who had the misfortune of being the brother of John Wilkes Booth, who assassinated President Abraham Lincoln. It is often what he is remembered for today, which is a shame as he was evidently a magnificent actor. While she was in the dark room looking at Edwin Booths letters, she found one from Henry Wadsworth Longfellow. She photographed the signature for me and I got this as an e-mail. It just freaks me out that she is sitting there holding a letter written by Longfellow. Which isnt as mind blowing as the fact that she is able to handle original Shakespeare. I like the fact that the definitive bibliography on Edwin Booth was written by his daughter - Edwina. I thought you might like to see this.
