This is insanity, and it stinks of croneyism. Many cities with much larger more complex downtowns and much less existing traffic infrastructure for absorption have turned their inner cities into wonderful future minded islands of pedestrian or mixed use streets. High Point already has a transportation hub at the IFHC, with access to Centennial, and a park planned for the area between the ihfc and Showplace. There is every reason to think that dieting Main Street would not only be successful, but so successful it could be a catalyst for a total rethinking and rebirth of downtown High Point. My suggestion is that the people of High Point need to get together and occupy downtown once each month, with increasing support each time- by lining up down the center of Main Street for one hour Activism sometimes needs to stare down the dubious interests of the politicians voted to represent the people. Will high point have the balls? A future downtown hopes so.
