This is interesting. Barcelonas not actually that expensive, I dont think. You can get tickets for the Palau de la Musica, the music hall, at a good price, and the Liceu, the opera house, isnt tremendously expensive. Ive never seen an opera there--I dont get opera--but I did see Wilco play there for like $45. Theater and dance are not expensive. The Sagrada Familia is overpriced, but thats because the money they get goes to the continued construction of the church. I know they dont get money from the government and I dont think they get much from Rome. The cathedral and other medieval churches are all free. The Picasso museum isnt all that great and I wouldnt bother going: all the good Picasso artworks are somewhere else. Meanwhile, the city itself is the main sight you see there, and thats free, while good food and drink are quite affordable and a three-star hotel isnt too pricey. Of course you can do even better if you use airbnb. Just watch the pickpockets and the bag-snatchers in the old city and the tourist areas, or your visit to BCN will be a lot more expensive and troublesome than you had hoped. They generally wont hurt you, but they will steal your stuff. (Stupid Spanish law: if they steal like under $250 the cops dont bother prosecuting because the perp will walk anyway. But if they use violence they go to jail, so they just blatantly come up and try to rob you with some sort of scam.) nytimes/2014/09/04/arts/international/a-look-at-the-cost-of-enjoying-the-arts-in-cities-around-europe.html?smid=fb-nytimes&smtyp=cur&bicmp=AD&bicmlukp=WT.mc_id&bicmst=1409232722000&bicmet=1419773522000_1
