This is not autism related but on this 70th anniversary of his death Id like to tell everyone a little story of something that happened last week. On Memorial Day this year I learned about my great Uncle Rito who died at age 25 and was listed as missing in action (this part is important) during The Battle of the Bulge in WWII on December 27, 1944. His mother (my great-grandmother) and his sister (my grandmother) went the rest of their lives, in to their 90s, never knowing what happened to him. Just last week my sister Ashley and I were searching for my grandfathers gravestone and in that search Ashley came across this. He is buried in the Henri-Chapelle American Cemetery in Liege, Belgium not far from where he died in Bastogne. He has been there the whole time. The mix up apparently happened because he was listed as being from Maryland (its even mistakenly written on his headstone and in his records as being a question about where he is from but no one knew how to get a hold of his family.) He was not from Maryland, he just shipped out from Maryland. He was actually from The Bronx, New York where most of our family is from, they had all of the other correct identifying info on him and even some things we didnt know. I think its so wonderful that he is not lost and has been at rest surrounded by his fellow soldiers this whole time and was found by his family one week before the 70th anniversary of his death. Its just a shame my great-grandma had to go her whole life never knowing what happened to him. Id like to believe they are together now though. :)
