This is not just a problem in Africa. Urban kids in America living in food deserts also experience this. San Franciscos Tenderloin being an example. Places where produce is scarce because there arent grocery stores, and people are living on pre-packaged food. The USDA defines food deserts as places where the food is more than a mile away. I think they should revise this to a minutes of Travel as there are many places in Urban environments where 10 Miles is very far where as those of us who grew up on a Farm think of 10 miles as very close But the USDA does say that the area around Cow Palace is a food desert, as is all of Candle Stick Park Area, and Hunters Point.
