This is on the dark matter. It is invisible and scientists cannot detect it or characterize it. The bright matter – planets, galaxies, comets and stars – makes up 15% of the total universe. The dark matter makes up 85%. The main tools used for studying dark matter, as mostly the case with the many issues being investigated in modern astrophysics, are: 1. Gravity – the signature of density and mass. 2. Cosmic microwave background – the radiation left over from the Big Bang. 3. Modifications to Einstein’s relativity – some little tweaks :) 4. Detecting weakly interacting sub-atomic particles. But till now, no one knows what the dark matter really is! :)
