This is one of many articles Ive seen today on ways to promote positive body image and to boost self-esteem. Interestingly, different issues or topics seem to come to the forefront in a big clump and this week is no exception. Numerous clients have raised the issue of body image and self esteem - for their kids, for their friends, for themselves. I have my hunches as to why this is so (maybe the piles of halloween candy or entering a season that has many gatherings planned around food). Even though this article addresses how a mom can help a daughter, I encourage you to read it. With our cultures emphasis on being thin and the fat-shaming that goes on daily, the tactics in this article can be used among friends, sisters, spouses, you name it. While Im on my soapbox, here are a couple of other articles I found today: parents/parenting/better-parenting/positive/talking-about-body-image/?page=2 parents/parenting/better-parenting/positive/raising-daughters-with-high-self-esteem/ parents/kids/eating-disorders/help-children-with-eating-disorders/ Maybe make one small change in your life this week. -Try to comment on something other than your daughters cute dress or her adorable hair. More along the lines of how hard she tried in school, or how smart she is to be able to set the table....(?I dont know, I have three boys but I do know that one of the first things I say to my niece is You are so cute!) -Forbid the use of the word fat in your house. -take a walk and think of how strong you are -Listen to the voice in your head. Is it talking to you like youd like to talk to a child? share your ideas...the more the better. Any other ideas? These are all hard things to change but important stuff. And, btw, I think I just realized the difference between a FB and a blog post. ;-)
