This is one of the many reasons that I just couldnt stand living in the US anymore. I dont mean to offend any of my American friends (you know I love you and stand in solidarity with you in your many struggles), but the leaders of your country - from the White House to the universities - are acting in ways that are not just questionable and surprising, but morally reprehensible and unforgivable. The fact that a college in Orange County, California, fairly close to where I used to teach, recently acquired an armored vehicle to enhance campus security is unconscionable. I have seen firsthand campus police train with local swat teams to practice suppressing a student occupation of a campus building. I have seen campus cops beat and pepper spray students peacefully protesting budget cuts and tuition hikes. I have seen plain-clothes campus police run surveillance ops on student gatherings. What might they do with equipment like this? And the college just laid off a number of part-time lecturers to boot!!! Thanks, David Freeman, for bringing this to my attention. Your letter to the president of Saddleback College was brilliant! If only more of our colleagues would speak out, and take action.
