This is several different flavors of bad-ass. Teaching kids to play music they love will take them much farther than memorizing play lists from the 1950s. And if you want to poo-poo the use of progressive metal-rock, I can tell you that this band, and this song especially, are great choices. Speaking for the drums (the only one of these instruments I play), Tool uses a very interesting set of variations of several drum rudiments, four limb independence, syncopations, off beats and fluctuating time signatures. Thats some pretty advanced stuff, and these middle school kids blew it away. They learned more lessons with this than many might realize. Rock on, kids. You did a fantastic job. And a big, double thumbs up for the teacher who had the vision and courage to set this up.
