This is so hard to accept for so many people. Dementia may rob - TopicsExpress

This is so hard to accept for so many people. Dementia may rob your memory, but it does not rob your soul. Persons living with dementia are usually capable of more than you can imagine or even give them credit for. I have worked in healthcare for 32 years now and the most heart wrenching thing I see is families pulling away from their loved one because that is not my mom, dad, grandma or grandpa. You are wrong they are still there maybe not in the capacity you are acustomed too, but they are still there. The best advice I can give is that we all have to learn to love unconditionally. Changes have been made in their lives that they had no control of, but you have the ability to change and that change is in you. They may not remember you or the past, but they may remember your presence, a gentle touch, a hand held or a stroll outside. It is so little of a gift to give in return for the love you received for all the years in their past. A physician once said the best medicine for human is love, someone asked, what if it doesnt work?He smiled and said, increase the dose.! Ok. As you can tell caring for the elderly is one of my passions and I will get off my soapbox, but I would like to leave you with one of my favorite quotes. It is by Bryant McGill, Every soul is beautiful and precious, it is worthy of dignity and respect, and deserving of peace, joy and love. He is so right. Words that are gospel to my ears.
