This is the ONLY post on independence Ill make on here because Im not very good at political debate so i dont think ill be changing any minds (who knows I guess(, but Im voting YES because of this stuff... Firstly I reckon a decentralised government would be more democratic & to some extent more accountable. As long as our state is run by politicians its unlikely to become a real democracy, but with a smaller country to govern the government is necessarily closer to the people it works for and matters of injustice will be more difficult for the government to ignore, especially if the people of Scotland show the level of political engagement they have done throughout this campaign (I heard 97% of people are registered to vote or something!). Im voting for more power to be granted to people living here to be able to make decisions about their own future: not just the yes or no question, but the important ones which will need to be asked when it comes to writing a new constitution for the country. In terms of social justice this is particularly important because debates regarding changes of law, the meaning of social justice and welfare are framed around how things have been done in the past and are reduced to political point scoring such as the we have to make these cuts to clean up the mess THE OTHER wankers made. This is a chance to start again and ask ourselves what kind of society we want to live in. Will SNP try and push their own agenda through when creating the new constitution? (reducing corporation tax being just one) I imagine they will, but that doesnt stop this being an incredible opportunity to make some fundamental changes - I see it in some ways as a blank canvas. There are things Im not sure about too, but the things which the media has made out to be stuff that would destroy an independent Scotland dont really bother me. A couple of banks changing headquarters, for example. How did that become a thing people were afraid of? And people keep talking about how we cant rely on oil. Well no. Of course we cant. Lucky that theres plenty of other productive activities & business in Scotland that contribute to GDP then eh? What is it that the rest of the UK is relying on for money these days anyway? I think thats about as accurate as I can be and there are definately holes in my argument so feel free to say if you think Ive said something wrong. I dont think Scotland will be instantly better, that will take a lot more lobbying & action after independence, this is just a really big opportunity. Oh and no more tories plz.
