This is the reply I got from Heineken regarding their use of elephants in their adverts. Heineken Hi Jayne. We want to emphasize that when HEINEKEN very occasionally uses animals in commercials they are always treated with lots of care. The health of the animals is being monitored before and after filming by independent specialists and professionals are present on set to guide the animals during the shoot. Furthermore it’s important to know that for this commercial various scenes were made with the help of special technique; CGI (Computer Generated Images). Via this technique it’s possible to create animals digitally so the actual physical presence of the animals isn’t necessary anymore. The scene in this commercial where the elephant lifts the actor with his trunk was completely made with this technique. This means that this scene was not performed by an actual elephant. Finally we can report that we have contacted the Animal Welfare Board in the country where the commercial was taped. They have confirmed that the animals were treated with the utmost care.
